Shifts in architectural ideology, such as postmodernism,
the emergence of the historic preservation ethic on
a national scale, and a new appreciation of the past,
contributed to the shift in architectural emphasis at
the University. Over the years, some of the fragments
of the old University disappeared as the evolving University
claimed a number of architectural victims.
Although the new complex of buildings ably answered
the pressing need for academic facilities, the transformation
of the campus was dramatic. The buildings' names commemorated
luminaries from the University’s past as well as contemporary
benefactors. (Bibliography)
