DeGarmo Hall, built in 1972, is the home of the Education
and Psychology Departments. This building was named
for Charles DeGarmo,
an 1873 graduate and a faculty member of modern languages,
who brought a unique educational philosophy to campus
and later became the president of Swathmore College.
During the celebration in February, 1982, the University's
125th anniversary, an electronic carillon located atop
DeGarmo Hall, a gift of Maria Jessa, was dedicated.
With the advent of the computer age on campus, an offshoot
of this new technology brought a redesign to the DeGarmo
Hall Room 52A classroom. It was selected for Illinois
State University's new venture, "Distance Learning."
