Historic Illinois State

McCormick Hall

Architect: William J. Lindstrom, State Architect, Springfield, Illinois; Addition (pool): Lankton-Ziegele-Terry and Associates, Peoria, Illinois

The Henry McCormick Gymnasium was erected in 1925. McCormick was a member of the History and Geography Departments (1869-1918). Although occupied in 1925, it was not dedicated to McCormick until homecoming in 1930.
It is a two-story brick structure trimmed in gray stone. The original plan separately housed the physical educatiMcCormick Hall Gableon for men and women with the men’s gymnasium often used as a concert hall having a seating capacity of 2300.
The architectural style of the building is reminiscent of the neo-Classical or Federal style with its stone quoins, gabled roof, keystone window headings, and heavily decorated façade. The medallions that grace the façade reveal a design element to reflect the gymnasium theme, that is, a weight belt buckled around each medallion. This neo-Classical architectural style is reminiscent of all campus buildings constructed between 1918 and 1955. In fact, Davies Gymnasium at Southern Illinois University at Carbondale is identical to McCormick.
Presently, McCormick Hall is still used by the School of Kinesiology and Recreation.
